Andy Guyon, the defensive coordinator at prep powerhouse Xavier High School (CT), operates out of a 3-3 front structure and will package his Thunder and Lightning pressure package based off offensive tendencies. In his Thunder pressure package, he will slant to the strength of the offensive formation and blitz off the weak side of the formation. Here is a look at how he uses odd stack pressures to attack 21 groupings.

xavier1Andy Guyon, the defensive coordinator at prep powerhouse Xavier High School (CT), operates out of a 3-3 front structure and will package his Thunder and Lightning pressure package based off offensive tendencies. In his Thunder pressure package, he will slant to the strength of the offensive formation and blitz off the weak side of the formation. It’s a man coverage concept where the corners will play number one, the free safety plays number two strong, the strong safety will play number two weak or number three strong while the remaining linebackers will combo the backs.

“We like to keep the rules simple so that there is no confusion and we can get lined up and play fast,” said Guyon. “We number the eligible receivers from the outside in. The corners are responsible for the #1 eligible receiver to their side. The free safety is responsible for the #2 receiver to the strength while the strong safety is the only player in our defense who has an adjusted assignment. We usually like to put our most intelligent and most versatile players at this position. He is either responsible for the #3 receiver to the strength or the #2 receiver to the weak side.

“This is a blitz we use when the run/pass ratio is better than 65/35 (run to pass). Our players have belief in this pressure; it is the first one installed in spring practice and training camp. It acts as our base defense and allows us to line up quickly because of the way we set our front. We are a field and boundary team, meaning we have set our strength to the field or to the two quick receiver side. The only people who do not move are our defensive linemen. Our 5-technique defensive ends play to the left and right side.”

Here is the pressure against typical pro sets (Diagram 31) and against pro/twins (Diagram 32).

Lightning is a weak side over load pressure that Coach Guyon will use against 21 personnel. The corners will play number one man to man, the free safety will play number two strong while the strong safety will play number three strong or number two weak. The Rover is the edge blitzer to the strength. The Sam and Mike are man to man on the two backs. The will linebacker blitzes the tackle.
