Introduction:

“As the leader, part of the job is to be visible and willing to communicate with everyone”

- Bill Walsh

No matter how you measure success, a key to finding more of it is better communication. Think about the best coaches you’ve had or know. One thing they all have in common is their ability to engage and communicate. Great coaches communicate in a way that builds relationships, inspires hard work and exudes the mission of their team.

It’s no coincidence that winning often follows.

Yet a lot of really good coaches struggle with communication. There are so many ways to interact with kids, staff and even parents, and we, as coaches, don’t always know the best way to go about it.

Like all good habits, tackling proactive communication requires effort and determination—and maybe a little help in finding the right tools. We set out to find the best aid for helping football coaches to communicate and engage those within their programs.

Here’s What We Found:

A few months ago, a reader of XandOLabs.com shared the name Programax with us. Programax is a coaching app with a wide range of functionality, and promotes its ability to help coaches lead a better program.

It’s a bold claim, so we did our due diligence. As it turns out, Programax is packed with robust features that help coaches to engage, motivate, track and plan across their entire program. In short, we found it can help make your job easier.

We were so impressed, in fact, we decided to share with you a few of the things we really love about Programax.

As a side note, we reached out to the folks at Programax and asked them to provide video clips to show how the app works.

Check it out below, and follow up with Programax at www.Programax.org/football for a more in-depth view of the product.

1. Messaging

We were in search of a tool that helps football coaches with communication. We found Programax to be one of the best options out there in this arena, and really loved the app’s ability to take the legwork out of engaging stakeholders within a program. The app’s messaging functionality allows you to connect with any combination of your program’s coaches, athletes and even parents in seconds via text or email.

For those coaches who use spreadsheets for logging team contact information, take notice: the Programax app stores and organizes it all for you, making it simple to not only communicate with your program, but to access the information you need at any time. We also liked that you can set up custom groups containing those you message most (think captains, assistant coaches, etc.), saving even more time as you send information across your program.

2. Strength & Conditioning

One facet of communication is driving action and accountability among athletes. Every coaching staff has a strength and conditioning program in place. The challenge is getting athletes to engage and make the most of their time off the football field.

We really like how Programax addresses this challenge. First, it uses technology—something today’s athletes know well—to drive performance improvement. The app makes it easy for coaches to compile a video library of strength and conditioning exercises that instruct athletes in the precise you want the activities executed. These videos then serve as building blocks for custom workout programs that provide a long-term plan for improving athletes’ strength and conditioning.

The sky’s the limit for coaches here: you can populate your account with strength and conditioning instructional videos you film yourself, or upload any of the thousands of videos already offered on YouTube.

Concerned about being overwhelmed or making time to create your own videos? Don’t be. Programax can be pre-loaded your account with a collection of sport-specific videos that are used and have been filmed by a trainer at a top NCAA FBS football program. Contact Programax for details on how to tap into this excellent resource.

How does the athlete engagement side of this feature work? Using their smartphones or any web-enabled device, athletes in your program access their own Programax accounts, view and execute the workout for the day as instructed in your videos, and record their performance. Results are posted in real time on program-wide leaderboards, permitting coaches and other athletes to see the weight, number of reps and overall completion of the athlete’s workout in a live environment.

What better way to encourage athletes to work harder than a leaderboard in their pocket? In this way Programax “gamifies” the workout experience, and serves as a driver of both competition and accountability within your program.

3. Calendar & Scheduling

It’s far from earth shattering, but a massively helpful feature when used in concert with the rest of the app’s features; the third thing we liked about Programax is its built-in calendar and scheduling functionality.

The beauty of this feature, in our opinion, is the ability for coaches to create separate, color-coded schedules for different groups within their program; coaches, athletes, teams, positions or events for example. These schedules appear only on the calendars of those they impact, as set by the coach or administrator, and can be synched to personal calendars on mobile phones, or within Outlook or Gmail. In the end, Programax provides a simple yet thoughtful approach to the important area of scheduling.

4. Camp Sign-Ups

Summer camps and summer leagues can be particularly demanding of a coach’s time. We loved Programax’s Event Management feature because it allows coaches to focus less on administration and more on camp curriculum and the athletes themselves. This feature enables coaches to easily create an event, invite participants through the app and even collect registration fees. The tool’s real time roster of sign-ups and key information on those individuals is a huge timesaver for coaches as well.

5. Coaching Your Coaches

Sharing information and collaborating across a coaching staff is critical for building consistency and momentum within a football program. With this in mind, we really appreciated one particular Programax offering called “Coaches’ Corner”. The tool allows you to upload video, PDF or image files directly to their account, and to share those items across all coaches within the program. Think of it as a Dropbox-like file sharing solution specifically for your coaching staff.

Importantly, you can upload content directly from other coaching solutions such as Hudl. While some existing tools are more robust in the area of playbook sharing and teaching for athletes in particular, few solutions offered a more comprehensive approach to storing and sharing vital team information for team leadership.

The Final Point…

We went looking for a product that did one thing well—communication—and found one that did so much more. In an industry where a lot of coaching solutions are singularly focused, Programax is the most robust and all encompassing solution we’ve seen.

We especially liked the Programax messaging, calendar and “coaching your coaches” tools, and their combined ability to help coaches lead programs and operate more efficiently. We found the Strength & Conditioning tools to be useful and engaging as well because of its customizability and use of technology. If we have a knock, it’s that Programax could provide more functionality in helping coaches to prescribe specific weights or reps to individuals as you can in some workout-specific apps. Still, it was far from a deal breaker considering all else that the app has to offer. As Programax continues to hone their already outstanding product, we trust small issues like this will be addressed and improved.

In the end, we love the multi-faceted approach that Programax provides for football coaches, and recommend that you check it out for your own program. The best way to experience the power of Programax is to see it in action via a short product demo.
